Statement

Having done fine art previously, it has allowed the integration of analogue and digital work to produce more experimental and conceptual designs in Graphic Design.

Final Year Independent Project

Race is an important topic that has been in the headlines due to recent events; however, those who identify as an interracial being are often discarded in society. Therefore, the challenge is to celebrate interracial individuals in the UK using the discipline of Graphic and Communication Design to do so. For that reason, ‘Everything In-Between’ was created and developed into a brand which celebrates interracial identities by sharing experiences. Experiences are shared through different mediums, from an interactive campaign to the user interface via notes and featured essays to a card game in collaboration with ‘We’re Not Really Strangers’. The brand in itself is very simple, neutral and contemporary; it tries to bring past experiences into the present in order “to achieve the expectation of the future”. It communicates the idea of diversity, being inclusive and open.

The video demonstrates an interactive campaign located in areas where there is a diverse flow of people (e.g. airports or train stations) and in places where people may have time to spare to read and to share their own experiences. Individuals can share their experiences by scanning the Snap Tag.

‘Notes’ is where individuals can read and submit their experiences. The video presents a more detailed journey of the interaction where users can add their experience freely or by using the prompts provided; personalisation of the note colour is optional too.

‘Featured Essays’ allow individuals to share longer experiences which are accompanied by multiple bespoke designs. The numbered navigation panel found on the right is fixed whilst scrolling. When hovered over, it displays the name of the article which the user can click on to read more. The ‘+’ directs users to the ‘Essay Archive’ which is where past featured essays are located.

‘Interracial identities’ is a topic of discussion which could lead to more powerful and meaningful conversations and connections with people, which can induce change. ‘We Are Not Really Strangers ‘(WNRS) is an existing brand that does this through a card game. As part of this project, it made sense to collaborate with WNRS to create an expansion pack which gets people thinking about interracial identities, whether this relates to them or not.
