Statement

The ‘Uncovered’ series seeks to deconstruct beauty standards through examining the skin condition vitiligo, celebrating imperfections, and embracing the beauty in difference.

Led by personal experiences with the condition, the series has been shaped by overcoming fears, judgements, and internal struggles; such as detaching from what is stereotypically considered as the norm. This has proven to be a key issue for those with vitiligo due to the condition’s clearly visible patches and lack of awareness surrounding it. Through painting these ideas in close-up compositions, the subject confronts the viewer with the barriers and stigmas associated with physical differences. By removing facial likeness and focusing solely on skin pigmentation, it offers viewers an opportunity to personally relate to the subject as well as build further public awareness surrounding the condition, effectively helping others to feel comfortable in their own skin.

‘Uncovered’ further explores the path to acceptance, using motifs of ripped and torn clothing as a means of conveying emotional and mental tolls that living with vitiligo imposes on an individual.Through painting these ideas in close-up compositions, the subject confronts the viewer with the barriers and stigmas associated with physical differences.
