Statement

My practice is concerned with improving mental health and well-being, specifically trauma patients. ‘Placidity’ is an instillation designed for clinical use within communal areas in hospitals.

Placidity

There are 24 light boxes symbolic of each hour within a day with a mix of my own photographs and illustrations. It offers an escape for those who may not be able to, or have the time to, go outside and enjoy the benefits of the nature. I hope to help viewers feel calm and at peace. By using light boxes to illuminate my images, I attempt to mimic the sunlight shining through the branches, creating a contrast between light and dark areas and bringing the patterns within nature to the forefront. I aim to hold the viewer’s attention and encourage observers to ‘take 5’, studying each box as a window into its own little world with the goal of making the familiar and everyday beautiful. It also speaks to ideas of mass extinction and the potential for synthetic biology as a method of preservation within the digital space. Through a digital archive, I aim to challenge attitudes towards contemporary digital art whilst considering the inevitable future of our planet.
