Statement

I’m Katharine, A Fashion Design Graduate specialising in womenswear. The portfolios displayed highlight some of the work i’ve completed in my final year at University.

Mother of Pearl x Decaying Ocean

My First concept is sustainability focused, inspired by the Decaying ocean. Through this project I have attempted to tackle the issue of fishing waste, plastics and pollution in the ocean through the use and experimentation of sustainable fibres and zero waste. This innovation project allowed me to explore new innovative ways of designing through zero waste draping and sustainable knitwear creating a conscious collection for Mother of Pearl.

Mother of Pearl x Decaying Ocean

The final garment for my innovation project ‘The decaying ocean’ incorporates a blend of zero waste draping, sustainable recycled knitwear and a light-weight tropical wool trouser. The thick knit jumper and practical pockets on the trouser have been inspired by historical fisherman imagery. Drawstring gathered through the draping emulates the knotted and tangled ocean waste. Inspired by imagery of discarded fishing equipment, rope has been used to intertwine the garment together.

Altuzarra x Balinese Rice Fields

My Second concept is inspired by Balinese Rice Fields, where I have drawn out shape, texture and colour from the landscapes. Looking at aerial photos of rice farms has allowed me to explore the patterns and shapes which can be found. My colour and fabric selection complement the natural, earthy tones.

Shrimps x Leopard

My final concept is inspired by the Leopard, taking a contemporary spin on the classic print through the experimentation of textile. Looking at a range of leopard print imagery has inspired my own print, embroidery and colour development. Vintage imagery of leopard print garments , helped guide my silhouette for design development.
