Statement

Highlights from final year project: Fruit, from British Classics to Tropical Abnormalities. My specialism is Digital Print Design.

Digital Printed Work

This work explores ‘Fruit, from British Classics to Tropical Abnormalities’. The following designs emphasise hand-developed motifs with use of CAD software for further manipulation.

Fruit Gardens

Highly detailed collection of fruit and floral motifs. This design uses hand-painted motifs using acrylic and later manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. An alternative design, features a placement non-repeat with alternative joyous rich yellow colour-way.

Inspired by the layering of gardens. This design uses multi-techniques such as hand-painting with gouache, watercolour and fine liner drawings to create a collage effect design. Later manipulation using Adobe Photoshop enables enhancement of techniques and repeat to be formed. An alternative design shows a contemporary colour-way twist.

Inspired by passionfruit and their flowers. This design uses hand-painted motifs using gouache with later manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. An alternative design shows a contemporary colour-way twist, with fruit holding original colour values.

Experimental Fruit

Inspired by sustainability in design. This design was hand-painted using homemade inks using fruit with later manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. An alternative design shows a colour-way twist, with fruit holding original colour values.

Inspired by sustainability in design. This design uses a mix of hand-painted motifs using gouache as well as relief print making using the real fruit. Later manipulation using Adobe Photoshop enables these ideas to be intergrated. An alternative design shows motifs being simplified due to colour application, isolating the shapes of the motifs.

Fruit Through Time

Inspired by William Morris, this design uses hand-painted motifs using gouache with later manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. An alternative design shows the original colour-way.

Inspired by the 60s, this design uses the digital process of using Adobe Illustrator to produce clean motifs. This platform was then used to create the repeat. An alternative design shows a muted colour-way twist.

Supporting Visual studies

Alongside my digital print designs, I explored the visual representations and qualities of fruit through applications of various mediums and substrates to form a collection of ideas in art form to inform digital print practices.

Frozen Fruit Photography

The purpose of this primary ice photography was to capture fruit in a way that is not usual or expected. This approach gives a level of intrigue and complexity, changing the perception of the fruit when observed through a unique medium. A variety of fruit was manipulated by using various techniques such as placing the fruit and water into uniform moulds before freezing, braking the frozen structures, and allowing the ice to melt and re-freeze before photographing. Photography of these highlighted compositions were captured.

Collage

The following collages are multi-media and multi-technique hand developed collages based from previous Ice Fruit Photography.

Refined Drawings

Fine liner mark-making from previous collage work of fruit and their textures, shapes and lines.

Illumination Photography

Fruit printed paper using natural juice from fruit, hand-developed backgrounds using acrylic paint, photographed with back lighting, and further use of Adobe Photoshop manipulation.

Collaged Illuminations
