Statement

Challenging the notions of traditional abstraction, pictorial space and depth through an interrogation of colour, geometric abstraction and painting in the expanded field.

This practice interrogates notions of pictorial and illusionary space, through an exploration of colour and geometric abstraction. The ability to create the illusion of three-dimensional space, depth and perspective is a big focus for my work, this is explored through elements of colour theory and fluorescent colours, geometric shapes and different material processes. My work takes forms and inspiration from geometric abstraction, using shapes with their own spatial and illusionary qualities to push the boundaries of pictorial space.

My practice has focused on using geometric shapes and forms with different illusionary properties, incorporating spheres, grids, cubes, geometric triangles and optical illusions into my paintings to further interrogate notions of pictorial space and illusionary depth. Whilst my use of colour varies throughout the series of paintings, penrose triangles, spheres, cubes and grids are all key motifs in my interrogation of pictorial space. Painting in the expanded field and extending my paintings into a physical space was a natural continuation of my practice, allowing me to push the boundaries of traditional painting in my exploration of both illusionary and physical space.
