Statement

Amalgamating archival and contemporary florals as inspiration for this collection generates a series of nostalgic multidisciplinary outcomes which use an array of innovative techniques and substrates.

Design for fashion

This collection, ‘Nostalgic florals in the 21st Century, aims to create a diverse yet cohesive collection, amalgamating history and contemporary visual design qualities. Archival sources and exhibition visits act as a primary source of inspiration. Consideration of the current market place and trend forecasts for Spring/Summer 2022 ensures the collection meets the consumer needs for this season. The collection is divided into five sub collections; Bohemian paisley, Sixties graphic, Sixties line, Victorian/Early 20th Century and Experimental.

Sixteen of the final designs are designed for garments or accessories, whilst the remaining four are tailored for interior outcomes.

Motif development

In order to create a varied collection, experimenting and testing different motif development processes is essential. Traditional methods such as printmaking, hand drawing and hand painting are adopted whilst innovative techniques such as digital embroidery, laser cut and 3D printing confirm the collection is innovative and meets the need for new-ness in the contemporary marketplace.

Floral installations

Inspired by contemporary sculptural practice, this series of floral sculptures have been developed and are heavily inspired by the mark making and pattern-like qualities explored within my preliminary work developed in semester one. Adopting techniques such as collage and mark making to form patterns on the laser cut forms ensures a level of detail and complexity to each individual floret. Set concrete is used to ensure the blooms stand freely. Additionally, this ensures the flowers can be moved and manipulated to create differing compositions. Exploring both monochromatic and full-colour palettes ensures the outcomes align with the artist inspiration.

Overloaded floral wall hangings

The following multidisciplinary pieces are formed using a variety of substrates and techniques. Painted papers, collage scraps, thread and monochromatic card are the primary mediums of choice. Laser cut, transparency and knotting are utilised to create a layered, overloaded floral composition which is both intricate and bold in nature. The use of stylised floral motifs nods to traditional 1960s design, whilst the use of collage adds a graphic element. Experimenting with scale and adding texture using threads and translucent papers ensures a series of eye-catching outcomes are generated.
